South East Asia–Middle East–Western Europe 5 (SEA-ME-WE-5) today announced the completion of laying its 20,000 km long undersea submarine cable system that will connect to Pakistan through a TWA landing station Karachi.
SEA-ME-WE-5 will be managed and maintained by TWA in Country, which is part of a consortium along with leading telecom operators from 16 other countries.
The total bandwidth of this submarine cable is 24Tbps (Terabits per second) which is the addition to Pakistan’s total internet capacity of 7Tbps and after sum up it becomes 31Tbps.
SEA-ME-WE-5 is a 20,000Km long cable system that connects Singapore to Europe (Italy and France) and traverses Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Oman, UAE, Yemen, Djibouti and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
For an end user, there will not be a prompt increase in the internet speed. However, ISPs now have the opportunity to buy wider pipes of internet bandwidth which will not only benefit the end users but also help the internet service providers improve the quality of internet connection they are providing and increase user experience.
Pakistan’s international links and bandwidth capacity include:
- TW1 with design capacity of 1.28Tbps
- Sea-Me-We-3 with 480 Gbps capacity with two fiber pairs
- Sea-Me-We-4 with design capacity of 1.28Tbps
- I-ME-WE with design capacity of 3.86Tbps
- Sea-Me-We-5 with design capacity of 24Tbps
